Artist Bio

A Familiar Spirit is a project created by Canadian artist Margot Meanie. She is a mixed media artist that flutters between sculpture, embroidery, beading, as well as photography and design often bringing many or all of these elements together to create a piece. She works with darker recurring themes such as: anatomy, religious, spiritual, and funerary iconography, mythology, fairytales, and folklore, animals and the natural world, as well as Victorian and Medieval aesthetics.  She describes her art pieces as "like jewelry, but for your walls and sacred spaces."

A Familiar Spirit has been a repeat vendor with Darksome Arts & Craft Market, a virtual market held quarterly online. She has done an in-person pop-up event, as well as has some pieces available at Phoenix Bookstore located in Montreal, Quebec. 

Margot has roamed the Canadian landscape living in Southern Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia for the first 38 years of her life. She developed many close friendships and got a very informal education in a multitude of crafts & artforms from her friends and various workplaces. She has resided in Montreal, Quebec for the past 6 years where she finally birthed A Familiar Spirit after 2 years of running the shop under the banner Moon Babe Shop. She changed the name in 2023 after finding her artistic voice had lead her down an exciting yet comforting avenue and felt the original name no longer suited the world she was creating. As the new year has just been heralded in she announced a move further east to New Brunswick is planned for the Spring of 2026. 

Before Margot began this passion project, she was a well regarded plus size fashion blogger. She was one of the first prominent alternative creators in the space and brought together a community of other alternative creators, together creating the @alternativecurves instagram page and facebook group which functioned as both a supportive community and also a resource to find accessible alternative fashion. She was featured in Cosmopolitan, Bustle, and Chatelaine among other publications.
